Pete Davidson Reveals the Real Reason He Got Sober: Mom ‘F***ed Me Up’

Pete Davidson is getting candid about his reasons for getting sober.
“I went to rehab this time. I was like, ‘I’m gonna I’m gonna actually do it so I could save some of this money I’m making and stop blowing it on rehab,’” Davidson, 32, recalled during his Saturday, April 11, comedy show at Las Vegas’ The Fontainebleau, per footage obtained by Us Weekly. “I did family week, [which is] when, with your therapist, you Zoom your family and they tell you how difficult it is for them to watch you do drugs.”
“I remember my mom popped on the screen, and she was like, ‘Peter, it’s really hard to be your mom. It’s not a fun job,” the Saturday Night Live alum recalled of the virtual visit. “I was still, like, newly sober, [thinking], ‘Well, you’re not f**king that special. What do you do?’”
Pete is the son of Amy Davidson and Scott Davidson, the latter who died in the line of duty while responding to the September 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City.
During his rehab call with Amy, the comedian finally decided to quit using drugs and alcohol.
“She went, ‘Enough.’ She f***ed me up. She was, like, ‘Peter, ‘It’s very hard to be your mom because I wake up every morning with the fear that I’ll turn on the news and see that my son has died,’” Pete added of his mom. “She told me all this on Zoom — from the house that I bought her on drugs. I was like, ‘Someone’s getting used to things.’ That got me sober.”
Pete is especially glad to be sober now that he is a father. (Pete and his girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt, welcomed daughter Scottie Rose in December 2025.)
“Thank God that I’m sober,” Pete said on the “This Past Weekend” podcast in September 2025 shortly before Hewitt, 29, gave birth. “I wish I had more time of sobriety ‘cause it’s only been like a year and change, but I’m very grateful that it happened now and with Elsie. In other relationships or when I was you knowI was a drug addict and very mentally deranged, that was my goal. ‘I need to have a kid. I need to get married’ ‘cause that’s how I grew up.”
In hindsight, Pete said that he was “not ready” to have a family when he was still struggling with substance abuse issues.
“I stopped dating and I was, like, ‘I need to f***ing get better and I need to be in a place where I could even have a healthy relationship,’” Pete told podcast host Pete Von last September. “I wasn’t looking for a relationship or looking to have a baby. It all just kind of happened at once, and it’s been like awesome.”
Pete and Hewitt’s first baby arrived nearly three months later.
“The best thing I’ve been telling people is [that Scottie is] the biggest gift,” Pete exclusively told Us Weeklyin January of adjusting to life as a first-time parent. “Nothing else matters as much or intensely, like career, activities, hanging out with people [or] what do people think of me, that sort of s***. I still want to do cool stuff, but it’s like, ‘Well, how long do I have to be away?’ Or ‘Is this worth being away?’”
