Mason Thames is having the time of his life working with Mckenna Grace.

Indeed, the actor revealed what he learned while starring alongside his girlfriend in Green Day‘s new comedy Nimrods after first working together in 2025’s Regretting You.

“My favorite thing about it is just how she takes up the screen,” Thames began in an exclusive interview with E! News, “and she becomes the character and fits into every world, every movie she’s in. That’s really inspiring to me.”

And Grace’s ability to balance work and play while starring as Olivia, the love interest of his character Tommy in Nimrods—which was inspired by the rock band’s early days—was simply punk rock as hell.

“Just professionalism, with being able to still have fun,” the 19-year-old said of the actress’ strength. “That’s such an important thing. We’re making movies. It’s so fun. This is our dream. So we’re gonna have fun.”

Before Thames and Grace, 20, came around to star in the coming-of-age movie, their romance began to blossom while together on the Colleen Hoover romance. However, neither initially realized they would be working on both projects.

“I was filming How to Train Your Dragon 1 and I had signed on to Green Day maybe a couple of weeks before,” he recalled. “I didn’t think she was signed on. It wasn’t even a thought in my mind. Then I signed on to Regretting You with Mckenna. I’d met her once before, so I texted her and I was like, ‘Hey, super excited to work with you. It’s gonna be fun.'”

“She was like, ‘Yeah, I’m so excited for Green Day.’ I was like, ‘What? What are you talking about? Green Day?'” he continued. “So we found out we were doing two movies back-to-back. It was a wild, crazy, weird coincidence.”

Although Thames and Grace—who hard-launched their relationship in February after more than a year of romance rumors—found love while on set, he believes they had a special connection regardless.

“We say all the time, if we hadn’t met before and we met on the day and were shooting a movie, our chemistry would be the same,” he emphasized. “That just goes with how easy it is to work with her.”

Nimrods follows Tommy and his two friends Fred (Kylr Coffman) and Chad (Ryan Foust) as they travel from Kansas City to Los Angeles after being pranked by Tommy’s brother Wayne (Keen Ruffalo) into believing they were invited to open for Green Day’s New Year’s Eve show.

As the trio hits road bumps along the road trip and their friendship is tested, Tommy meets Olivia, who invites them to a party in town, and sparks fly.

While Thames took cues from Grace while working on Nimrods, he revealed that Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong—who made cameos alongside bandmates Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt—helped him avoid his head from filling with brain stew.

“Billie sent a video to us at the beginning of production and told us to be absolute, just go crazy, be rogue, be punk, and we did,” Thames added. “We took that to heart and it was all the advice we needed.”

Nimrods is in theaters nationwide Aug. 14.
