Halle Berry Says 18-Year-Old Daughter Nahla’s Move to College Was ‘Scary’: ‘There’s a Little Fear’

The actress, 60, said the family are all “so proud” of Nahla Ariela Aubry, 18, but that she and her son are still adjusting to the new dynamic at home

Speaking at the Create & Cultivate Festival Panel in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 20, the actress, 60, exclusively told PEOPLE that 18-year-old Nahla Ariela Aubry‘s move to college was “a little scary.”

“She’s the first to go and she’s my baby girl,” Berry said of Nahla, whom she shares with her former partner, model Gabriel Aubry. “I felt proud of her, but there’s a little fear. She’s in the world now all by herself.”

“She went to another state, and I just hope that she makes the right decisions and that her dad and I hope we raised her up right and that she’ll make the most of her experience.”

Berry, who celebrated her 60th birthday on Aug. 14, explained that the new dynamic at home has taken some getting used to, particularly for her son, Maceo-Robert Martinez, 12.

She told PEOPLE that Maceo-Robert, whom she shares with her ex-husband, actor Olivier Martinez, is happy that he “gets to sleep” in his sister’s bed and “feels like an only child” in her absence.

“There are perks that come with that,” she said. “They no longer have to compromise. We don’t have to agree on dinner anymore. He gets to decide these kinds of things for himself.”

The Monster’s Ball star admitted that Maceo-Robert misses his sister and that it feels “off” without her there, but told PEOPLE the family is “all so supportive and so proud” of Nahla.

Nahla graduated from high school in June, and her parents reunited to mark the milestone, more than 16 years after they split.

In October, Berry revealed that her daughter had been accepted into college early, at age 17, sharing a photo of a cake with “You did it Nahla!!” written on it with icing on Instagram.

The teen previously sampled a taste of college life, with her mom sharing in June 2025 that she was attending a college summer program that summer.

While serving as a guest co-host on Today with Jenna and Friends at the time, Berry explained that she was both worried and excited about the next chapter of her daughter’s life.

“I’m not one of these moms that feels like, ‘Oh, she’s leaving.’ Yes, will I worry? Of course,” she said. “But am I excited for her to start her life and figure out who she’s gonna be? Absolutely. I’m dying to see who she’s gonna be and what she’s gonna do and what she’ll discover.”
