Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ Trailer Reveals How the Magical World Begins, Set to Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’

Greta Gerwig is giving fans their first look at Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew!

The 43-year-old Barbie director debuted the film’s first official trailer on Tuesday (October 13), featuring a look at the creation of Narnia, a star-studded cast and Led Zeppelin‘s classic song “Stairway to Heaven.”

The movie is the first-ever film adaptation of C.S. Lewis‘ 1955 novel The Magician’s Nephew, which tells the story of how Narnia was created, long before the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

The trailer begins in London before opening up into a colorful fantasy world, as two children discover that other worlds exist beyond their own.

David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell star as Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, who find themselves on an adventure involving magical rings and Digory’s eccentric uncle Andrew, played by Daniel Craig, per Deadline.

The footage also offers a look at Emma Mackey as Jadis, the future White Witch, and teases Aslan, the lion voiced by Meryl Streep.

Greta Gerwig Reveals How She Got Led Zeppelin’s Song for Narnia

The use of “Stairway to Heaven” is a major part of the new trailer, and Greta personally worked to secure permission for the song.

During a trailer presentation in New York City, Greta revealed that she met with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, according to the Associated Press.

“They did it because they saw the heart in the story,” she said of the musicians granting permission.

The song also connects to the movie’s central theme: the creation of Narnia through Aslan’s music.

Speaking about her connection to the story, Greta recalled being fascinated as a child by the idea of “a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life.”

In a statement shared by Netflix, she explained that the idea of a universe created through music stayed with her long after she first read the book.

“I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being,” she said.

When Does Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Come Out?

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will arrive in IMAX and theaters worldwide on February 12, 2027, with IMAX sneak previews beginning February 10.

The film will then debut on Netflix on April 2, 2027.

Greta also spoke about wanting to bring the movie to the biggest screen possible, despite making it for a streaming service.

She revealed that when she approached Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos about the project, he encouraged her to make the movie for the biggest screen she could imagine.

“I told Ted I only know how to make movies for the big screen. He said, ‘Make the movie for the biggest screen you can imagine,’” she said, via AP.

The cast also includes Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma.

Greta wrote and directed the film, with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who previously worked on Barbie, composing the original score.
