Gal Gadot Seals Her Wonder Woman DCU Return Fate 3 Years Later

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman tenure defined an era, and her DC Universe future has been sealed.

Gadot made her debut as the iconic DC hero with 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the second installment in the Zack Snyder-helmed DC Extended Universe, before going on to lead two solo films for the character, and appearing in a variety of other franchise films, namely Justice League. While James Gunn’s hiring as DC Studios Co-CEO came with the soft reboot of the universe into the DCU, some actors and characters have still carried over, leaving questions as to Gadot’s potential return.

Now, in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns for her new Prime Video thriller The Runner, Gadot was asked about her chances of a return in Gunn’s DCU. The star confirmed that she hasn’t had “any specific conversations” with Gunn or DC Studios about either reprising her role of Wonder Woman, or taking on a new character in the vein of Jason Momoa as Lobo, saying the last major conversations had were when “they came to the studio, and they really wanted to develop the third one.”

In the time since, Gadot hasn’t “heard anything,” and looks to have sealed her chances of her Wonder Woman future, as she offered a touching message of support and encouragement for whomever takes on the role in the DCU going forward:

Gal Gadot: This is such an incredible character that so many of us care about so much, so whoever it’s going to be to portray her, I wish for her that she enjoys this amazing ride with this amazing character. And I’m just grateful that I was granted the opportunity to wear her boots and celebrate this incredible character and everything she stands for.

Gadot’s last appearances as Wonder Woman memorably came as the DCEU was in its final moments, having cameos in both Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash. The former role, in particular, left some believing there could still be a part for her in the DCU going forward, as its post-credits scene featured Steve Agee’s Economos and Jennifer Holland’s Harcourt, only for Gunn to later confirm said scene was not considered canonical.

Gadot’s confirmation that she hasn’t had any conversations about her Wonder Woman return in the DCU marks the first official update in the three years since her back-to-back cameos, as she and Gunn had notably not offered any outright comments on plans for the character, apart from a brief social media post from the latter confirming they had not cast a new actor for the part. It also comes in the midst of development ramping up on the DCU’s Wonder Woman film, with Ana Nogueira penning the script after her work on Supergirl, and being a part of the overall creative team for the new franchise.

Amidst the reported shifts away from her casting, there were some who believed Gadot could return in the DCU as a character other than Diana Prince, particularly after Momoa’s aforementioned Lobo debut in Supergirl. Some fan-favorite choices have included the antihero Big Barda, the Batman-connected Talia al Ghul and Poison Ivy, finding her mixture of physical resemblance and on-screen performances to fit nicely with the characters.

Given how personal Wonder Woman continues to be for the star, it certainly doesn’t come as too much of a surprise that Gadot isn’t interested in taking on another role in the DCU. However, given she’s also been busy the past few years with everything from Disney’s live-action Snow White remake to Netflix’s record-setting action-thriller Heart of Stone and Prime Video’s upcoming The Runner, the time may very well come in the near future for her and Gunn to properly sit down and find a new legacy for her to start in the growing universe.
