Florence Pugh, Mike Faist, Zoe Kazan, and Christopher Abbott at the EAST OF EDEN New York Screening Event

The cast and show creator of East of Eden came to the New York screening in fairly high style for a Netflix premiere — except that one guy, of course. As we’ve noted before, it seems clear that Florence Pugh and Zoe Kazan are taking this press tour very seriously, lending it both prestige and high expectations. We just wish they didn’t have to shoulder that burden almost entirely.

It’s got that dramatically offbeat feel that she seems to go for, as well as the sort of twisted-romantic style she’s been utilizing, which is a form of theme-dressing, we suppose, if you know the story of East of Eden. We get the choice. We just can’t say we like it much. The paleness doesn’t favor her and we hate that feathery hem. Her hair and makeup are gorgeous, though.

Zoe Kazan in Markarian

Definitely not a hugging dress. It’s also a pleasantly surprising focus-pull of a dress for an Executive Producer, but like we said, these two clearly feel the need to step things up. It’s a bold, photogenic piece and we really like it for her, but we think it calls for more aggressive styling.

Nope! Dick move, mister! Would you show up at a formal wedding like this? At a fancy dinner party? At ANY OTHER EVENT where you know your colleagues will be dressed more formally? Putting aside the expectations placed on women in all areas of life to put more work into their presentation, and even allowing for the rather clear asumption that Pugh and Kazan are working towards awards nomination and have stepped up their fashion games way more than one would expect for a Netflix series press tour, this is just a huge thumbing of his nose at any expectations of professionalism. The outfit’s fine. If this were a photo call – or even a less formal style of press tour – we’d be less annoyed, but it’s very obvious that this one’s operating at a certain level and we don’t care how expensive they are, showing up in a hoodie and jeans makes you look like an asshole.

Christopher Abbott

It’s not a very interesting suit or even a flattering one for him, but there’s at least some effort there. He looks okay. He’s at least on roughly the same level as his female colleagues.
