First look at Aaron Taylor-Johnson in “seductive” Netflix series hailed as “magnificent”

A first look at Aaron Taylor-Johnson in new Netflix series Enigma Variations has been unveiled. The star was cast in the “seductive” show earlier this year, replacing original actor Jeremy Allen White.

Based on the book of the same name by Call Me By Your Name author André Aciman, the story follows the actor’s character Paul, “a man remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him across six transformative years”.

“An intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love in a world of endless choices, Enigma Variations asks the question: Will we know when we’ve found the one?” the synopsis adds.

Taylor-Johnson has now been snapped in a series of new on-set filming pictures, wearing a coat and white turtleneck in some, and a shirt in others. The actor is seen alongside co-stars Sarah Pidgeon and Riley Keough, who play Chloe and Maud, respectively.

The series also stars Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander as Claire, Barry‘s Devon Terrell as Manfred, Saturday Night‘s Nicholas Podany as Harlan and Hacks‘ Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Noah.

The Wheel of Time‘s Amanda Kate Shuman is writing and executive producing, while Living‘s Oliver Hermanus directs.

The original book was called “a magnificent, living thing” by the New York Times Book Review, while Bookworm‘s Michael Silverblatt labelled it “one of the great novels of this century so far”.

“A breathless, sketched rendering of one man’s life in love, Aciman’s novel speaks earnestly not only of longing and lust, but also of more complicated emotions . . . [Aciman] portrays Paul convincingly as a sensuous and self-aware figure, forever treading the border between melodrama and tragedy,” added Publisher’s Weekly.

Taylor-Johnson is next due to be seen in Werwulf, with director Robert Eggers recently teasing that the actor’s turn as a cursed farmer is his “best performance” yet.

Enigma Variations will stream on Netflix.
