It was Disney Night for the Top 9 contestants, who each performed songs from classic Disney films for the two-hour live show.
The episode also marked Jennifer’s first time serving as a judge on the panel since her elimination on Season 3 of American Idol, which aired in 2004.
She joined Carrie, who matched the theme in a Belle from Beauty and the Beast costume, and her fellow judges, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan.
Many fans online expressed how much they enjoyed watching Jennifer as a judge and thought she deserved a permanent spot on the panel over Carrie.
“Can we swap Carrie for Jennifer Hudson permanently, thanks #AmericanIdol,” one fan wrote on X.
“How about Jennifer stay, and Carrie goes! #AmericanIdol,” proposed another.
“Carrie Underwood seems off.. doesn’t bring the vibe to the show.. #americanidol,” said a third.
“Jennifer Hudson is a big improvement over Carrie. JHUD for next season please,” suggested a fourth.
“Jennifer Hudson would’ve been a better judge than Carrie Underwood is,” echoed a fifth.
“Now… can Jennifer Hudson stay on #americanidol as her presence and she’s the only idol with an egot plus is the voice it’s just simple. And maybe replace another female judge….” added a sixth.
The Before He Cheats singer has received widespread criticism over her role as the “villain” judge since joining the show last season.
Carrie took over for former judge Katy Perry, who departed the show after Season 22.
The U.S. Sun exclusively revealed that producers have bent over backward to accommodate Carrie to keep her on the show.
She nearly didn’t return this season after facing intense backlash from viewers during her freshman season as a judge.
However, she agreed to return under several strict conditions, which significantly altered the format of the long-running series.
Fans previously called for Keke Palmer to replace Carrie after her guest appearance as a judge earlier in the season.
It seems viewers may get their wish regarding Carrie leaving the show, as an insider claimed that she and Luke might not return next season.
“Carrie and Luke’s heart don’t seem to be in it anymore. Especially Luke, he seems like he’s just going through the motions,” the source exclusively told The U.S. Sun.
“Carrie seems grateful for the opportunity and is polite to everyone, but you can tell she doesn’t fully want to be there,” they added about Carrie.
Having Carrie on the show was seen as a full-circle moment, given that she had previously won Season 4 of American Idol in 2005.
She has since become one of the biggest names in country music as an eight-time Grammy Award winner and a powerhouse vocalist.
