Andrew Garfield Plays OpenAI’s Sam Altman in First ‘Artificial’ Teaser — Watch!
Andrew Garfield is bringing Sam Altman and his story to the big screen.
Neon released the first teaser for Artificial on Tuesday (September 8), with Andrew portraying OpenAI CEO in a film directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Simon Rich.
The movie dramatizes the upheaval at OpenAI in November 2023, when Altman was removed as CEO before returning to the company days later.
The teaser gives Andrew‘s character an ominous prediction about the future: “Countries will fall. Industries are gonna collapse,” he says.
Yura Borisov plays OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, while Monica Barbaro portrays Mira Murati and Ike Barinholtz takes on Elon Musk. Cooper Hoffman and Jason Schwartzman also star. Mark Rylance plays Geoffrey Hinton, the artificial intelligence researcher known as the “Godfather of A.I.”
Andrew told The Guardian he hadn’t met the man he plays: “I don’t know Sam Altman. I’ve never met him.”
The project reunites Andrew and Luca after 2025’s After the Hunt. It also reaches audiences through a different studio than originally planned.
Amazon MGM Studios dropped the movie from its slate in June. At the time, an Amazon spokesperson said that the company would help the filmmakers find another distributor. Neon subsequently acquired the film.
Before its theatrical release, Artificial is set to premiere at the New York Film Festival in October. The movie opens in select theaters on December 25, 2026, with a wider release following in January.
