‘Tom & Jerry’ Lyrics: John Mayer Explains Meaning Behind Title of First Solo Song In 6 Years

John Mayer is back with new music!

The 49-year-old musician just released his new song, “Tom and Jerry,” which marks his first solo music in six years.

While he has been featured on other artists songs, including Lainey Wilson‘s “Phone, Keys, Wallet” earlier this year, this marks his first release of his own music since his 2021 album, Sob Rock.

John Mayer reveals where “Tom and Jerry” came from

Ahead of the song’s release, John shared where the title of the song came from and explained it’s meaning.

“‘Tom and Jerry’ was the name I used when saving my first voice memo with this song idea. ‘And if you ever come through, which I doubt you’ll do, I’ll run away with you.’ From that moment on, the adventure began in bringing that feeling to life,” John shared on Instagram.

He continued, “I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating every time – I get to work with a group of incredibly talented and deeply dedicated artists who will stop at nothing until the sound comes into focus and becomes a picture. I can’t wait to tell you more about it, but first, it’s important that you know who contributed to this track.”

John co-wrote and co-produced the track with Blake Slatkin, and the song marks the first release on his newly launched label, Sob Rock Records.

The musician’s new record label is in partnership with Mercury Records.

“Working with Tyler Arnold and the talented team at Mercury Records has already proven to be a great partnership,” he shared in a statement, via THR. “The path from creative vision to execution has never been easier or more rewarding. I feel very inspired, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
