Why Adrian Grenier believes he was snubbed from ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’

Adrian Grenier believes there’s a specific reason he “didn’t get the call” to appear in “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”

In an exclusive interview with Page Six, the actor theorized that the “backlash” to his character, Nate Cooper, got him snubbed from the forthcoming sequel to the 2006 cult classic, which will see his on-screen love interest, Anne Hathaway, reprise her role as Andrea “Andy” Sachs.

Grenier, 49, told us he “of course” would have loved to participate in the second movie, set to hit theaters in May.

“We’re all fans of the movie, whether or not we’re in it. Obviously, it was a disappointment that I didn’t get the call to be in the sequel, but I also understand there’s some backlash with Nate, the character, so that might have something to do with it,” he opined. “But I think that just leaves room for a spinoff.”

In the original film, Sachs’ personal life suffered the more she prioritized meeting the high demands of her intense boss, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), editor-in-chief of high-fashion publication Runway magazine. (Streep will also star in “DWP2.”)

Fans branded Cooper an unsupportive, immature and selfish boyfriend, which took the “Self Custody” star by surprise.

Grenier told Entertainment Weekly in June 2021, “I didn’t see some of the subtleties and the nuance of this character and what it represented in the film until the wisdom of the masses came online and started to push against the character and throw him under the bus, and I got flak.

“All those memes that came out were shocking to me. It hadn’t occurred to me until I started to really think about it, and perhaps it was because I was as immature as Nate was at the time. And in many ways, he’s very selfish and self-involved; it was all about him. He wasn’t extending himself to support Andy in her career.”

However, after taking the “time to reflect” and engage in “much deliberation” about Cooper’s “shortcomings,” Grenier acknowledged “the truth in that perspective.”

Though Cooper and Sachs broke up in the flick, they reconnected at the end after she quit her job as Priestly’s assistant to refocus on her goal of becoming a journalist.

During their final meetup, Cooper revealed he would be moving to Chicago for a new chef gig.

When we suggested to Grenier during our chat that it’s possible he wasn’t asked back because his character’s storyline simply came to end, he was unconvinced.

“Either way, it’s a disappointment,” he said. “Either way, it leaves room for a beautiful spinoff in which Nate has his own film.”

Asked whether that was a serious suggestion, Grenier replied, “Obviously!”

In the meantime, the Hollywood star-turned-Texas farmer is focused on his new short film, “Self Custody,” which follows the story of a struggling father (Garrett Patten) and his desperate attempt to reclaim an old bitcoin bonus worth millions.

The lost fortune sends him spiraling into a high-stakes world of encrypted wallets, forgotten passwords and dark web danger.

“Self Custody,” which was also directed by Patten, is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
