Dakota Johnson Is California Cool in New Calvin Klein Underwear and Denim Campaign

Nothing comes between Dakota Johnson and her Calvins…except more Calvin Klein. The actress stars in the brand’s new denim and underwear campaign. Photographed by Gordon von Steiner in a house in Topanga, California, the photographs capture Johnson lounging around the house in various states of undress. “It was very chill,” she recalls on a recent phone call. “There was a lot of great music playing, a lot of jokes, a lot of me walking around naked essentially, and a lot of people avoiding eye contact with me.”

In the shoot, she indeed wears two different pairs of jeans—and only the jeans—which are a reflection of her own personal denim style. “I love a baggy jean because it just makes an outfit, and these are the perfect baggy, schleppy jean to wear with a chic top—what I do is I fold the waistband over so I don’t wear a belt and it makes the fit,” Dakota explains. “But if I feel like, wow, I’m slamming today, I’ll wear a high-waisted, tighter jean. It depends on the time of the month really, which I think most women can relate to.”

Though she is a denim aficionado, Dakota does not abide by the “never wash your jeans, and instead put them in the freezer” edict that so many obsessives swear by. “No, that’s disgusting. That’s absolutely disgusting,” she immediately counters when asked, laughing. “Also, do you have a deep freezer in your house? No. Only deep freezers kill bacteria. I’m a really clean girl and I’m going to throw those puppies in the wash every day, every damn day.” And before you ask, she’s throwing the jeans in the dryer too; after all, stretching them after washing them is half the fun.

She’s similarly attracted to opposites when it comes to underwear. “The Calvin underwear that I’m really into at the moment is the boy shorts, because I sleep in them and then I can bop around the house in the morning and do things,” she reveals. “When I get home, I take off my pants—especially if it’s a hot day—so I’m in my underwear in my house all the time, that’s just who I am.”

But of course, her other personality is all about—to quote Ned Flanders—to feel like she’s wearing nothing at all. “I wear basically dental floss underwear. I’m that person,” Dakota adds. “Which Calvin does also make… You feel like there’s nothing there, and that’s wonderful for me.” She thinks for a second. “Honestly, this is the best gig I’ve ever had. They really check all my boxes.” Now she’s laughing. “In this world, I’m just trying to get my underwear boxes checked.”
