Woody Harrelson and wife Laura Louie made the premiere of his new show, Brothers, a date night.

Harrelson and Louie, who married in 2008 after years in a relationship, rarely appear on the red carpet together, but they made an exception for the event at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, which also brought out his costar Matthew McConaughey. (Harrelson and Louie are the parents of three adult daughters, who were not pictured.)

While Louie tends to stay out of the spotlight, she has been part of Harrelson’s life since the days when he was on Cheers. He hired her to be his personal assistant in 1987, and they began dating three years later.

To hear him tell it, as he did to The Hollywood Reporter in July 2017, Harrelson performed a song that he had written for his future wife.

“I remember I was 28, and there’s a line in it: ‘I’m only 28, but I’m bored with everything I do. / I’ve got nothing when I’m not next to you. … Are you thinking about me, baby? / ‘Cause I’m thinking about you.’ It was pretty direct. I play her the song, and afterward she says, ‘Woody, I’ve been in love with you for the last two and a half years.’ The insecure actor in me is like, ‘What about the other six months?!’ But I moved through that, and I picked her up and carried her inside to my bedroom, and we made love, and we began a great relationship.”

The No Country for Old Men actor added, “I got the most amazing wife I could imagine. But did marriage calm me down? I don’t think anything will ever calm me down.”

At the Brothers premiere, Harrelson’s costar McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, were accompanied by two of their three teenage children. McConaughey’s mother, Kay “Ma Mac” McConaughey, was there, too.

In their new Apple TV series, True Detective alums Harrelson and McConaughey play fictionalized versions of themselves. The story is that their longtime friendship is “thrown into chaos when they uncover a decades-old secret” exposed by Ma Mac (Holland Taylor): They might be brothers.

Brothers premieres Sept. 23 on Apple TV.
