Chris Evans is being held hostage by Anya Taylor-Joy in Netflix’s new movie Sacrifice.
The first look for the film shows Evans, 45, as Mike Tyler, an action star in the midst of an existential crisis as he searches for his comeback in the middle of a star-studded environmental function held in a Greek mine. However, when Taylor-Joy’s Joan, a cult leader, hijacks the festivities and takes the event’s attendees hostage, he must find a way to simply survive.
“During a star-studded charity gala brimming with celebrities, billionaires, and empty speeches, a movie star in the midst of an existential crisis (Evans) is taken hostage by a radical warrior (Taylor-Joy) and her devoted followers,” a logline reads.

It continues, “As the night descends into chaos, both an inward journey and an outward adventure ensue, where the lines between performance and belief — and salvation and sacrifice — begin to blur.”
Joining Evans and Taylor-Joy are Vincent Cassel and Salma Hayek as a billionaire couple hosting the event, as well as Charli xcx as pop star Mother Nature in a small cameo.

Directed by Romain Gavras (Athena), with a script co-written by Will Arbery, Sacrifice is “kind of a roller coaster,” the director says.
“You need to enter the film like you’re going to enter a ride and let yourself go,” he told Netflix’s Tudum. “There’s a lot of rug pulls and you think you’re going this way, but you’re going that way.”

When it came to finding the right actor for Mike, Gavras praised Evans as a “very interesting” actor for the part.
“His comedic timing is amazing. He’s an extremely intelligent actor that understands completely who he is and his own relationship with ego,” he said. “And so we kind of pulled that thread and cranked the idea of an actor to 100. This is what mythology does: you take a character and you crank it to 11.”
As for Taylor-Joy, Gavras said he’s been a “fan” since “very early on.”
“She has something very otherworldly and whimsical about her that is striking just in terms of iconography,” he said. “I don’t see many other people that could have carried that character — she comes with so much strength, but also a sensibility that makes the character very three-dimensional and that makes her strong and vulnerable at the same time.”
The movie is inspired by Gavras’ affinity for mythology, having grown up listening to his father interweave tales with myths.
“The inspiration goes from Greek myths to French stories like Joan of Arc,” Gavras told Tudum, before jokingly adding, “And another myth that is more recent, which is Lord of the Rings. Will and I were writing, and at some point we’re like, ‘Oh, we’re making Lord of the Rings.’ It’s a journey of people wanting to throw the ring of power in a volcano, and we are making the same journey.”
Sacrifice will release on Oct. 16 on Netflix.
