Julianne Moore Will Star in Sarah Ruhl’s Faydra Off-Broadway

The world premiere play is a modern take on the Greek myth.

Oscar-winning screen star Julianne Moore will lead Faydra, a world premiere from Sarah Ruhl, heading Off-Broadway via Manhattan Theatre Club. The production, to be directed by Les Waters, will play a limited engagement at New York City Center Stage I beginning February 2, officially opening February 25.

The In the Next Room playwright has reimagined the Greek myth, centered on the titular Faydra after an arrow from Aphrodite makes Faydra lust over her own soon-to-be stepson. Further casting and creative team members are to be announced.

“There’s nothing like watching a homegrown Manhattan Theatre Club commission become a magnet for talent,” says Artistic Director Nicki Hunter in a statement. “Sarah Ruhl’s bold, funny, and devastating reimagining of this classic tale will draw the immensely gifted Julianne Moore back to the stage, and mark Les Waters’ return to MTC after three decades. We look forward to announcing additions to this exciting company in the months ahead.”

Moore’s screen credits include Still AliceFar From HeavenThe HoursThe Kids Are All Right, and Boogie Nights. She made her Broadway debut in 2006’s The Vertical Hour.

Faydra joins an MTC season that includes Nick Payne’s The Unbelievers Off-Broadway, and Jocelyn Bioh’s School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play; a revival of Clifford Odets’ Awake and Sing!; and the world premiere of David Hare’s Montauk on Broadway. An additional production is to be announced.
