Dakota Johnson Wears an Old Favorite Slogan Shirt for a New Era

Dakota Johnson is venturing into new creative spheres and the next step in her relationship with Role Model.

Performing in Chicago on Thursday, Role Model—a.k.a. Tucker Pillsbury—debuted a new song titled “I Love You,” which includes voicenotes from Johnson. Actor, producer, featured artist era loading.

Johnson wasn’t present at the show, but was spotted out and about in Los Angeles the day following in a louche and laidback rockstar-off-duty look. She wore a D.A.R.E vintage t-shirt (one she’s long had in her collection of slogan tees), with The Row’s flowing Gala pants in black, and Phoebe Philo black leather gathered flats. She accessorized with a Valentino brown suede and jacquard fabric Nellcôte bag and black cateye sunglasses by Krewe. For jewelry: Jessica McCormack diamond and gold hoop earrings, Marlo Laz baguette hoop emerald earrings and bracelet, and a gold band ring from Verdura. Her hair was up in a loose, messy ponytail with curtain bangs parted in the middle.

A big vintage tee has been a summer staple among celebrities, from Zoe Kravitz to Jennifer Lawrence and Zendaya. It’s also a pillar of the Dakota Johnson school of style: earlier this week, she sported a Prince merch tee from his 2004 Musicology tour with Levi’s 501s.

More on Johnson’s new era? Videos taken from Role Model’s set see the singer responding to Johnson’s voice clips live. “Hey, I think you’re perfect,” he sings, and a female voice responds: “You say that to everyone.”

Then, he asks: “K, well is it working?” and she responds “Yeah, but don’t tell anyone.”

The couple have been linked since April this year, and were quickly spotted finding their rhythm with coordinating outfits: Johnson in head-to-toe The Row, including a ruby red cotton canvas jacket and ballet flats, Pillsbury in a Brunello Cucinelli knit and Repetto derby shoes.

Meanwhile, we got a first look at Johnson in Flesh Impact, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s short about the life and legacy of Marilyn Monroe. She looks completely unrecognizable, with the iconic coiffed blonde bob. More to come: the film will arrive on the centenary of Monroe’s birth, shown at the Venice Film Festival.
